Every device connected to the internet—whether it's a mobile phone, a smart refrigerator, or a massive datacenter server—is assigned a unique numerical identifier known as an IP (Internet Protocol) address. Geolocation technology relies on massive databases maintained by Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) and third-party data aggregators to map these IP addresses to specific physical locations worldwide. By analyzing a given IPv4 or IPv6 address, our tools can accurately determine the originating country, region, city, and approximate latitude/longitude coordinates.
Furthermore, the global internet is essentially a network of networks. These massive networks are managed by Internet Service Providers (ISPs), tech giants, and educational institutions. Each of these administrative entities is known as an Autonomous System (AS) and is assigned an Autonomous System Number (ASN). When you use NetScope to analyze a target, observing the ASN reveals exactly which corporation or ISP owns the infrastructure routing the traffic. This is critical for distinguishing between residential internet connections, mobile carrier networks, and commercial datacenter hosting environments.
The Domain Name System (DNS) is often referred to as the phonebook of the internet. Because humans cannot easily memorize strings of IP addresses, DNS translates human-readable domain names (like example.com) into the machine-readable IP addresses needed to establish web connections. A standard DNS lookup queries multiple record types, including A records (IPv4), AAAA records (IPv6), MX records (Mail Exchange servers routing emails), and NS records (Authoritative Name Servers).
A Reverse DNS (rDNS) query performs the exact opposite operation. Instead of starting with a domain name, you start with an IP address and query the network's pointer (PTR) records. Reverse DNS is an essential cybersecurity and server administration tool. Most spam filters and email providers (like Gmail or Outlook) require a valid PTR record matching the sending domain to accept incoming mail. If a server lacks a properly configured Reverse DNS record, its traffic is highly suspicious and often blocked entirely by modern firewalls.
The internet is constantly monitored by security research groups and threat intelligence networks. When an IP address is detected engaging in malicious activities—such as sending massive volumes of spam emails, hosting malware payloads, performing brute-force login attempts, or participating in a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) botnet—it is reported to a DNS-based Blackhole List (DNSBL).
